We all know what alcohol is. But do we know what rubbing alcohol is? Well, let me tell you a little more, shall I? Rubbing alcohol came to use in the mid-1920s in North America, where it was used as a liniment for massages, hence the name. Also, the “rubbing” in the name was added to emphasize that this is not alcohol for human consumption, as it is highly toxic. Ingesting it or inhaling it may cause alcohol poisoning and, in some cases, even death. So, better stay away and do not tase it. Nowadays, rubbing alcohol is used as a general household cleaning agent, as a disinfectant, and it also has several potential uses in personal care.
Rubbing alcohol has 2 different concentration levels, 70% or 99% isopropyl alcohol. Experts say that 70% concentration works better as a disinfectant as it has more water, which helps it to dissolve more slowly, kills bacteria and penetrates cells. As you can see, a higher concentration doesn’t always mean that it’s better. In fact, a higher concentration of alcohol may cause damage to your surfaces, glassware, or plastic appliances. So, please use it wisely.

Alcohol on Fruit Flies
Spray a little bit of rubbing alcohol on fruit flies, and it will kill them almost instantly. It will also prevent them from coming back but be careful! Don’t spray on your fruits as it may cause fruit to spoil.
Shoes – if your shoes get that funny smell, spray some rubbing alcohol on them, let them dry, and the smell is gone.
Collar – we all get that ring around the neck of your shirt, but we don’t really know how to get rid of it. Well, if you rub your neck with rubbing alcohol, using a cotton ball or a cotton pad, it will help you keep your shirt cleaner longer.
Stickers – did you ever try to remove a sticker, and in the middle of doing so, it just tore in half, and you were left with that ugly-looking piece of paper on your wall? Well, next time when it happens, saturate the sticker with the alcohol, wait 10 min, and it should come off smoothly.
Make-up brush – it’s pretty standard that we rarely clean our make-up brushes. But bacteria exist there as well. In a small cup, pour some rubbing alcohol, put your make-up brushes in and let them soak for a few minutes. You will see how all the old dirty make-up comes up in a few moments. But remember, do it on a regular basis and keep your brushes bacteria-free.
Frost – did you ever sweat trying to remove frost from your windshield while running late for work? Nightmare right! Well, before next winter, in a spray bottle, make a solution of one part of water and 2 parts of 70% rubbing alcohol, and when you spray that on the frost, it will be easier to remove it.
Acrylic Paint – you decided to do a little bit of DIY on your house, but you made a mess and have acrylic paint all over yourself. You can wipe the paint off using rubbing alcohol, but keep in mind that time is of the essence here, so act fast.
So, as you can see, this relatively eco-friendly solution can be used as a cleaning agent, disinfectant, and antiseptic as well. But please remember, it is not DRINKABLE, and it is quite flammable as all the other alcohols. I almost forgot, store it in a dark, cool room, out of reach of children.
